About Our Roses
Romance in Blooms is proud to carry Alpes Flowers’ roses. Located near Bogota, Columbia, Alpes Flowers has been Florverde SGS certified since 2003.
Florverde is a certification program that was created to preserve and protect the environment and improve the lives and living standards of the farm workers and their families. These certified farms agree not to use chemicals that are not allowed in the US.
Alpes farms incorporates innovative ideas to reduce pesticide use and conserve water.
- Alpes Farms has planted tobacco “walls” around their greenhouses. Tobacco produces a sweet, sticky, sap that traps insects, keeping them from getting into the greenhouse, and cutting down on pesticide usage! Florverde’s goal is to reduce pesticide use by 60% in three years.
- Alpes Farms collects the rain water from the roofs of the greenhouses, and uses it for watering the roses in their drip irrigation system.
They also provide their employees health care, on-site day care and many other benefits. I had the opportunity to meet the owners of the farm when they were here in September of 2007. They are warm and caring people who love flowers.
